Regional Textiles: A Short Guide to Telling Them Apart

India’s textile traditions are frequently discussed as a single heritage, which obscures how genuinely different they are from one another. The distinctions are technical — in weave, dye method and loom type — and once understood they are easy to recognise.

Banarasi

Silk with brocade work in gold or silver zari, produced in and around Varanasi. The distinguishing feature is the density of the brocade and the weight it produces. Genuine handwoven pieces show slight irregularities in the motif and floats of thread visible on the reverse. Perfect uniformity usually indicates a powerloom.

Kanjeevaram

Heavy mulberry silk from Tamil Nadu, distinguished by the way the border and body are woven separately and then interlocked — a join that is visible and, in genuine pieces, will not separate when pulled. Contrasting borders and temple motifs are typical.

Chanderi and Maheshwari

Both from Madhya Pradesh, both notably lighter. Chanderi is known for its sheer, glossy texture from a specific silk-cotton combination. Maheshwari is flatter, with reversible borders and characteristic stripe and check patterns.

Ikat

Not a place but a technique, practised in Odisha, Telangana and Gujarat. The yarn is resist-dyed before weaving, which produces the characteristic feathered edge on every motif. Double ikat, where both warp and weft are pre-dyed, is extraordinarily labour-intensive and priced accordingly.

Jamdani

A supplementary weft technique from Bengal, in which the motif is woven in by hand rather than embroidered afterwards. The reverse side shows no trailing threads between motifs — this is the simplest reliable authenticity check in the entire category.

Bandhani and Leheriya

Resist-dye traditions from Gujarat and Rajasthan. Bandhani is tied in thousands of small points; genuine pieces retain slight puckering from the ties. Leheriya uses diagonal rolling to produce wave patterns.

Ask which cluster a piece came from and whether it was handwoven. Sellers who know will answer immediately; the hesitation itself is informative.
