Skincare Routines Have Become Too Complicated

The multi-step routine arrived as an aesthetic and stayed as an expectation. It has been extraordinarily good for the industry and considerably less good for the skin of the people following it.

More products means more variables

When a routine contains nine products and the skin reacts badly, identifying the cause is close to impossible. Dermatologists dealing with irritated patients spend most of the consultation removing things rather than adding them. A short routine is not merely simpler; it is diagnostically useful.

Actives compete and irritate

Layering acids, retinoids and vitamin C in a single routine frequently damages the barrier that all of them depend on. The result is redness, sensitivity and peeling, which is then treated by adding a soothing product — extending the routine further while addressing a problem the routine created.

The three that carry the evidence

A gentle cleanser, a moisturiser suited to the skin type, and daily broad-spectrum sunscreen. This combination has more supporting evidence behind it than everything else in the category combined. Sunscreen in particular does more for long-term skin appearance than any serum on the market.

Add one thing at a time, slowly

If something specific needs addressing — pigmentation, texture, acne — introduce a single active and use it consistently for at least eight weeks before judging. Skin turnover takes roughly a month; anything assessed after a week is being assessed on placebo and lighting.

Price is a poor predictor

Formulation quality does not scale reliably with cost. Several of the best-evidenced ingredients are available in inexpensive, well-made products. Much of the premium in this category buys packaging, fragrance and marketing rather than efficacy.

What no routine can fix

Sleep, sustained stress, smoking and genuine dermatological conditions. Persistent problems belong with a dermatologist, not with a longer shelf of products. The industry has an obvious interest in blurring that line.

Three products, used consistently, applied with sunscreen every morning. Almost everything beyond that is optional refinement sold as necessity.
