Men’s Fashion in India Is Finally Getting Interesting

Indian menswear spent a long time offering two options: formal wear inherited from a colonial office code, and casual wear imported wholesale from elsewhere. The space between them was almost empty. That has changed substantially in the last few years.

The formal-casual binary has broken down

Workplace codes relaxed, and the category that filled the gap is genuinely new — structured but unlined jackets, trousers that are neither suiting nor denim, shirts designed to be worn untucked without looking accidental. This middle ground now represents the largest part of the market and did not meaningfully exist a decade ago.

Indian silhouettes have returned without the costume framing

The kurta was, for years, an occasion garment worn during festivals and weddings. It is now worn ordinarily, in contemporary cuts and fabrics, frequently with Western pieces. Bandhgalas and Nehru collars have moved into professional settings. What changed was the framing: these are being designed as clothes rather than as heritage references.

Climate has finally entered the conversation

For a long time Indian menswear followed European templates in fabric weight and construction, which is absurd in most of the country for most of the year. Designers now working seriously with linen, lightweight cotton, open weaves and unstructured tailoring are solving an obvious problem that was ignored for decades.

Fit remains the weakest link

Sizing across Indian menswear brands remains wildly inconsistent, and body proportions here differ from the templates many brands still use. Until this is addressed properly, tailoring remains essential rather than optional for anyone who wants clothing to fit.

Where the market is still thin

Genuinely good footwear at mid-range prices. Larger and smaller sizes. Well-made basics that survive twenty washes. These remain underserved, and the brands that solve them will do better than those adding another premium line.

The interesting work is no longer imitation. It is designing for the climate, the body and the occasions that actually exist here.
