Streaming Changed Everything About How Entertainment Gets Made

Streaming is usually described as a change in how audiences watch. The more consequential shift happened upstream, in what gets commissioned, how it is structured, and which languages and regions get produced at all.

Format constraints disappeared

Broadcast television imposed rigid structure: fixed episode lengths, act breaks around advertising, and season lengths set by scheduling. Streaming removed all of it. Episodes now vary in length within a series, seasons run to whatever the story requires, and the act break as a structural device has largely gone. This has produced genuinely better pacing in some work and self-indulgent sprawl in others.

Regional production expanded enormously

In India, the clearest effect has been the commissioning of work in languages that national broadcast largely ignored. Series in Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil and Punjabi have found audiences well beyond their linguistic regions, aided by subtitling that broadcast never prioritised. This is arguably the most significant cultural consequence of the shift.

Success is measured differently and privately

Ratings were public and comparable. Streaming metrics are internal, selectively released and defined by each platform. Completion rate, subscriber acquisition and retention now matter more than audience size, which changes what gets renewed in ways nobody outside the platform can observe.

The commissioning risk profile changed twice

The initial expansion funded unusual, specific work that broadcast would never have approved. As the market matured and subscriber growth slowed, commissioning has become markedly more conservative — more established formats, more recognisable names, fewer genuine risks. The window in which the unusual was heavily funded was narrower than it appeared at the time.

Discovery is now the constraint

The volume of available content vastly exceeds what any viewer can navigate. Excellent work disappears because it did not surface in a recommendation feed. Being commissioned is no longer the difficult part; being found is.

The pipe changed, and then everything flowing through it changed with it.
