Packing Light Is a Skill, Not a Personality Trait
Travelling light is usually presented as a character quality — the mark of the seasoned traveller. It is not. It is a set of specific decisions, most of them made before you have packed a single item, and anyone can apply them.
Choose the bag first and let it enforce the limit
The most reliable technique is constraint. A large bag will be filled regardless of trip length; a small one cannot be. Select a bag you can comfortably carry for an hour and pack only what fits. This single decision does more than every packing tip combined.
Count outfits, not garments
Most overpacking comes from planning per-day. Four or five combinations that work together will cover a two-week trip, provided the colours are compatible and you are willing to wash things. The alternative — a distinct outfit for each day — is how a week’s trip becomes a suitcase.
Everything heavy should be worn, not packed
Boots, the heaviest jacket, the bulkiest jumper: these travel on your body during transit. It is mildly uncomfortable for a few hours and removes a substantial proportion of the bag’s weight and volume.
Assume you can buy things
Travellers routinely pack for contingencies that could be resolved in twenty minutes at any destination. Toiletries, an umbrella, an extra shirt, medication for common ailments — all available almost everywhere. The exceptions are genuinely specific: prescription medication, spare glasses, and equipment for whatever you are actually travelling to do.
Wash things during the trip
A small amount of detergent and a sink converts a fourteen-day packing problem into a four-day one. Quick-drying fabrics make this trivial. It takes ten minutes every few days and eliminates roughly half the bag.
What the light bag actually buys you
Not smugness. It buys the ability to walk from the station rather than wait for transport, to change accommodation on a whim, to take the local bus, and to arrive at the end of a travel day without your shoulders aching. The freedom is practical, and it compounds across every day of the trip.
