AI Tools at Work: Where They Help and Where They Quietly Cost You
AI assistance has moved rapidly from novelty to routine in a great deal of professional work. The productivity gains are genuine. So are several costs, and these are less visible because they surface later.
Where the gains are clearest
Tasks with a known correct shape and a tedious execution: drafting a first version, summarising long documents, converting between formats, writing boilerplate code, generating variations for comparison. In these, the tool removes effort from work that was never the valuable part, and the output is easy to verify.
Where the costs accumulate
Tasks requiring judgement about what should be produced rather than how. A generated draft anchors thinking to its own framing, and the resulting work is frequently more conventional than what the person would have produced unaided. This is difficult to notice because the output is competent.
Verification is the hidden expense
Confident, plausible, wrong output is the characteristic failure mode. For anything factual, cited or consequential, verification is required — and verifying an unfamiliar claim frequently takes longer than producing it correctly would have. Work where the cost of an undetected error is high is exactly where these tools save the least.
Skill erosion is real but slow
Capabilities that are not exercised degrade. Where a tool handles the difficult portion of a task consistently, the person’s own facility with it declines. This matters most for junior staff, who may never develop the underlying skill, and it is invisible until the tool is unavailable or wrong.
Confidentiality deserves an actual policy
Client material, personal data and internal documents pasted into third-party tools leave the organisation. Many businesses have no position on this, which means the decision is being made individually by whoever is in a hurry.
A workable approach
Use these tools for volume and first drafts, retain the judgement about what is being made, verify anything consequential, and be deliberate about which skills you are choosing not to practise.
